Road Trip

The highway was a centipede
I saw its many feet
We moved inside its stomach
The tires dragging it

My sister was sound asleep
throughout our long trip
My brother did not peep
out the window of our jeep

With hands on the steering wheel
my daddy felt in charge
He did not know what moved us
the highway oh so large

The picture of the centipede helps the reader understand A Stanza 1.

In Stanza 1, the highway is compared to a centipede with many feet, which helps evoke the idea of the road having many lanes and movement. This imagery is central to the stanza’s theme of the journey.
