Zandile is a young girl who makes an imaginary friend named Bongi one day while coming home from school. Bongi lives in the same area as Zandile and has the same shoes as her. Zandile's grandmother, Gogo, tells her about her father, Tom, who has many children and her mother, Lulama, who lives in the Transkei. Gogo praises Zandile for being clever and tells her stories, which gives Gogo purpose. One day, Zandile is taken away in a white van, and Gogo reports it to the authorities. Zandile writes letters in the sand to Gogo in hopes that the birds will deliver the messages. Lulama, Zandile's mother, had stolen her and forbids Zandile from contacting Gogo, forcing her to work and beating her. Zandile and her friend, Lindi, talk about "changes in girls" and discuss misconceptions about menstruation. Lulama reveals her dreams of becoming a famous singer but had to give up her dreams after becoming pregnant with Zandile. Lindi goes to Johannesburg for a wedding and Zandile asks her to find Gogo. Meanwhile, Lulama arranges Zandile's marriage with a wealthy boy in the village. Zandile is asked by her school to recite a praise poem to a teacher, but in reality, it is meant for Gogo. Gogo is seen on stage packing a suitcase in the scene. Lindi returns and tells Zandile about her new boyfriend, who knows Gogo. Zandile finds the address of Gogo's friend, who gives her the suitcase packed by Gogo. Sadly, Gogo passes away, and the story is actually the author's biography turned into a play written by Gcina Mhlophe.
