There are different reasons that drove them to leave, known as "push factors," and reasons that attracted them to the U.S., called "pull factors." Ultimately, ethnic enclaves, which are communities where immigrants settled, had a positive effect on these immigrants in the late 1800s. They not only offered them a place to live but also opened up better opportunities that improved their lives overall.
