Courage Under Fire by Karen Holt
The claim made in this story is that the government supported Arab militias in killing, torturing and raping women in Darfur. Halima Bashir was won of those women. She is telling her story in hopes that people will know that she believes there is still hope in her homeland. The claim does not conflict with my personal observations as this is my first time reading about this woman¡¦s story. I have no background information about the claim. I am unaware of the author¡¦s expertise. Although the author is a reporter for the magazine, Essence, which is promoting the sale of Bashir¡¦s memoir, Tears of the Desert: A Memoir Survival in Darfur, I believe the author is unbiased and trustworthy. I say this because the news media whether reporting on television or in print, are credible but do make mistakes at times.
