classmates response:The ethnic enclaves had both a positive and negative impact on immigrants in the 1800's. It had positive impact on immigrants because the ethnic enclaves gave immigrants a place to stay. It also offered them newspapers in their own language, food and ingredients to make their favorite native dishes and other things, and to continue their traditions. This offered them the privilege to live their life as they want and to feel somewhat safe while continuing their lives. The ethnic enclaves had a negative impact on immigrants because often when the ethnic enclaves tended to settle they were in the poorest parts of the large cities. This is the only place immigrants could afford, which caused these specific parts of the cities to become crowded and unhealthy to live in. As a cause of most of the immigrants being pushed out of Europe because of having to flee economic hardship, persecution, or food shortages, they decided to move to another place they thought out to be safe. I believe the ethnic enclaves had both positive and negative effects on the immigrants because they were given a place to live and feel somewhat safe, yet they had to seek out help from friends and family, and often worry about overpopulation and unhealthy environments. "Making character education part of Americanization programs shows how some people looked down on immigrants. Assuming that parents weren’t teaching their children simple values such as honesty or cleanliness reveals a prejudice against immigrants." (Unit 6, Lesson 3, page 5). This proves that they would also have to worry about being able to teach their children basics and manners in order to fit in and adapt to their new found environment.

I appreciate your balanced perspective on the impact of ethnic enclaves. While they certainly provided a sense of community and cultural preservation for immigrants, the overcrowded and unhealthy living conditions highlight the complexities of their experiences in the new environment.

Your point about the prejudice faced by immigrants in the context of character education is particularly striking. It underscores how systemic biases can further complicate the already challenging process of assimilation and integration into society.
