Video Transcript:
Bill John Baker, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief, 2011–2019: Before removal, 90% of the Cherokees were literate in reading and writing. There wasn't a business in the Cherokee Nation that wasn't owned by a Cherokee.

Catherine Foreman Gray, Cherokee Nation Historian: A lot of us had adapted to European ways. So in the late 1820s, Georgia started passing what we call the harassment laws and they were a series of laws that were passed that extended its jurisdiction over the Cherokee Nation. Cherokees were not allowed to mine gold on their own land, they were not allowed to meet in council, it was considered illegal. Cherokees were not allowed to testify in court. And the Cherokee Nation ended up taking the state of Georgia to court.

Chuck Hoskin, Jr. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief: We took a lot of steps to resist removal. One of the things we did was to tell our story that we had been here before there was a United States. That we had a rightful claim to the land and its resources. That the assertion of the laws of states like Georgia to our people and on our land was just wrong.

Bill John Baker, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief, 2011–2019: Nobody wants to give up their homelands. Nobody wants to be removed from where their ancestors have spent millennium.
