Researchers Charles Buffum and Craig Harger say that the destruction of the USS Revenge changed the course of history. After the ship sank, the Navy demoted Oliver Perry, the ship's commander. Because of this demotion, Perry was denied another high seas command. Instead, he was assigned to the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. Perry assembled and commanded a small American naval force. In the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, with two battleships and 500 men, he defeated the British and retained control of the Great Lakes. After the battle, Perry was promoted to captain and awarded a medal by Congress. Buffum and Harger assert that ultimately the shipwreck of the USS Revenge played a direct role in shaping U.S. history and Perry's career.
