In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail on a voyage that would change the course of history. Columbus left Spain on August 3, 1492, with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. After weeks at sea, on October 12, 1492, Columbus and his crew finally reached land. They landed on an island in the Bahamas, which Columbus named San Salvador. He thought he had found a new route to Asia, but he was actually in the Americas.
During his journey, Columbus met the indigenous people living on the islands. He called them "Indians" because he believed he had reached India. Columbus and his crew took some gold and other resources from the islands and returned to Spain in 1493, claiming the territories for Spain.
