Bryophytes are non-vascular plants that produce spores for reproduction. They have specialized reproductive structures known as gametangia, which are organs that contain gametes (sex cells).
The male gametangium, called an antheridium, produces sperm cells. The female gametangium, called an archegonium, produces egg cells.
During fertilization, a sperm cell swims to an egg cell in the archegonium to form a zygote. The zygote then develops into a sporophyte, a structure that produces spores through meiosis. The spores are released and germinate into new gametophytes, completing the life cycle of bryophytes.
