REMEMBER, for this portfolio you are writing a narrative, not an essay. Your narrative should include characters, setting, plot events, conflict, and theme. I cannot tell you how long it has to be as you are writing your own story. However, I can tell you that with the requirements of the rubric EVERYONE’S narratives should be AT LEAST TEN(10) PARAGRAPHS LONG with characters, settings, dialog, and plot events. Finally, also remember that the purpose of all narratives is to entertain. Have fun with your writing and be as creative as you can!

The Whispering Woods

In a small town nestled between rolling hills and lush green fields, there was a rumored stretch of woods known to locals as the Whispering Woods. The townspeople, mostly farmers and shopkeepers, spoke in hushed tones about what lay within; tales of enchantment and mischief danced through their conversations like the fireflies that populated the summer nights. Youngsters would dare one another to step just beyond the treeline, but none ever ventured far, for it was said that the woods had a way of altering one’s path—or even one’s mind.

Among the townsfolk was a spirited girl named Elara, with wild curls that framed her freckled face and eyes that sparkled with curiosity. Unlike her friends, who often laughed off the spooky legends as mere folklore, Elara was captivated by them. Her grandfather, a local carpenter, had once told her stories about the woods and its guardians—mystical beings that could either bless or curse those who dared to enter. Armed with a lantern and her brave heart, Elara decided it was high time to explore what the Whispering Woods held.

One crisp autumn afternoon, with leaves crunching beneath her feet, Elara made her way to the edge of the woods. The sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows that danced like phantoms around her. “I’ll only go a little way in,” she promised herself, her pulse quickening with a mix of excitement and trepidation. As she stepped into the lush greenery, a thick canopy formed overhead, and the world outside faded into a distant hum. The air there was cooler, laced with the scent of pine and something sweet, almost like the sweetness of dreams.

Deeper into the woods, Elara stumbled upon a clearing, and her breath caught in her throat. An ancient oak tree stood majestically at the center, its gnarled roots enveloped by a bed of shimmering blue flowers that seemed to glow even in the muted light. “You’re beautiful,” she whispered, approaching the tree. Suddenly, a soft voice floated from the branches above, “Beauty lies not in appearances alone, young one.”

Startled, Elara looked up and found herself face-to-face with a small, ethereal creature—about the size of a sparrow, with wings that resembled delicate petals. Its luminous skin shimmered like moonlight. “I am Sylva, guardian of the Whispering Woods.” The creature’s eyes twinkled with mischief. “And you first must pass a test if you wish to wander these enchanted paths.” Elara, heart racing but curious, nodded eagerly.

“What do I have to do?” she asked, her voice steady despite the fluttering in her stomach. Sylva smiled, and with a wave of its tiny hand, the clearing transformed. The trees around her became silhouettes, and the whispers of long-forgotten tales curled around her ears like tendrils of smoke. “You must listen and choose wisely,” Sylva instructed. “Each whisper carries a truth—some enlightening, others deceiving. You must discern which path to take.”

As eerie melodies filled the air, Elara closed her eyes, allowing the whispers to wash over her. A voice, soft as a breeze, beckoned her toward a path veiled in mist. “Follow me, and you shall find treasures that cannot be measured,” it promised. But another voice, sharp and insistent, warned her, “Stay back! Shadows always carry a price.” Elara’s heart raced as she weighed the options, each whisper clawing at her resolve.

“Trust yourself, Elara,” she murmured, remembering her grandfather’s words about bravery and wisdom. “What would he do?” She reopened her eyes, resolute. “I choose the light,” she declared, stepping toward the path illuminating with soft brilliance. Suddenly, the mist began to clear, revealing not just an ethereal garden but also a hidden pond, shimmering like a thousand stars caught in water.

Sylva fluttered around her joyfully. “You have chosen wisely! The light reveals hidden beauty, and with it comes the gift of understanding.” As Elara knelt by the tranquil waters, she caught her reflection, not just of herself but of her hopes and dreams. The pond showed her future—a tapestry woven from her passions, dreams, and the courage she had displayed today.

“Remember, young one, every choice shapes your path,” Sylva whispered as the woods began to shift back to their original form. Elara stood up, her heart swelling with gratitude. She had faced a fearsome crossroads and emerged not purely unscathed but profoundly changed. She realized that the real magic of the Whispering Woods was not about fairy tales or treasure but rather about self-discovery and the choices that define our lives.

As she retraced her steps home, the echoes of the whispers lingered in her mind, a melody of purpose resonating within. When she finally stepped back onto the familiar dusty road of her town, she felt different—braver, wiser, ready to face whatever the world had in store, knowing she carried a piece of the Whispering Woods within her heart forever.
