Then, choose three of the questions below and use them to reflect on your experience of writing a narrative text. Write your answers in your notebook.

How much planning did you do before you began writing your narrative text? How did planning help you complete the writing task?
What was the biggest challenge you faced in drafting your narrative? Was it with sequencing events, developing the plot, or describing settings and characters in vivid ways? What did you do to overcome this challenge?
Compare your first draft with your final draft. How did you use revision and editing to improve your draft?
Use the rubric to evaluate your final narrative text. What are the strengths of the narrative? What are some areas you want to work on?
Consider the self-selected fictional narrative text you have been reading over the course of this unit. Suppose you had the opportunity to have a discussion with the author of this text—writer to writer. List three questions you would ask the author about their process. How might their observations strengthen your own writing abilities?

Reflection on Writing Narrative Text Portfolio

1. How much planning did you do before you began writing your narrative text? How did planning help you complete the writing task?

Before starting my narrative, I took considerable time to plan. I created a detailed outline that included the main plot points, character sketches, and the setting. This process helped me clarify my ideas and organize my thoughts logically. By visualizing the sequence of events and character arcs beforehand, I was able to maintain focus while writing, which minimized writer’s block and allowed me to stay on track with the narrative flow. Planning also ensured that I had a clear direction for the emotional beats and thematic elements that I wanted to convey.

2. What was the biggest challenge you faced in drafting your narrative? Was it with sequencing events, developing the plot, or describing settings and characters in vivid ways? What did you do to overcome this challenge?

The biggest challenge I faced while drafting my narrative was developing the characters in a way that made them relatable and believable. In my initial drafts, my characters were somewhat flat and lacked depth. To overcome this, I revisited my character sketches and added backstories that explained their motivations and desires. I engaged in free-writing sessions from each character's viewpoint, which helped me understand their emotions more deeply. By integrating these insights into the narrative, I was able to create more dynamic and engaging characters who resonated with readers.

3. Compare your first draft with your final draft. How did you use revision and editing to improve your draft?

Comparing my first draft to the final draft, the improvements are stark. The first draft was more of a rough outline with limited descriptive language and a less cohesive plot structure. Through revision, I focused on enhancing the dialogue, adding sensory details, and refining the pacing of the story. I also revisited the structure to ensure that each scene contributed meaningfully to the plot arc. In the editing phase, I actively sought feedback from peers and used their insights to identify areas that lacked clarity or needed further development, ultimately resulting in a more polished and compelling narrative.

Additional Reflection (Optional)

If I were to discuss my experience with the author of a self-selected fictional narrative, I would ask the following questions:

  1. What is your process for developing multi-dimensional characters?
  2. How do you approach the revision phase—what do you prioritize?
  3. What strategies do you use to maintain a strong narrative voice throughout the story?

These questions would provide valuable insights into the writing process, which could inspire me to adopt new techniques in my own work and enhance my narrative skills.
