COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, first originated in the city of Wuhan, China in December 2019. It is believed to have originated from a seafood market in the city, where the virus is thought to have been transmitted from an animal to a human.
The virus quickly spread within China and to other countries around the world, leading to a global pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020.
As of September 2021, COVID-19 has infected over 223 million people worldwide and has caused more than 4.6 million deaths. The virus has had a significant impact on economies, healthcare systems, and daily life around the world, leading to lockdowns, travel restrictions, and social distancing measures in many countries. Efforts to control the spread of the virus have included vaccination campaigns, testing, contact tracing, and public health guidelines such as mask-wearing and hand hygiene.
