8. What level has the most energy to begin with?
9. In your own words, describe what happens to the energy lost at each level.

1 answer

8. The producers have the most energy to begin with.

9. As energy is transferred through the food chain, some of it is lost at each level through processes like respiration, heat loss, and waste production. This results in less energy being available at higher trophic levels. For example, only a fraction of the energy in the plants consumed by primary consumers (herbivores) is transferred to them, and even less is transferred to the secondary consumers (carnivores), and so on. This energy loss is why food chains are typically limited in length.
