Hundreds of years ago, when most Europeans were farmers, people lived where the soil and climate were good for farming. Today, much of Europe's population is still concentrated in regions where flat or gently rolling land, high quality soil, and mild climate produced rich yields for farmers.

In western

Europe, most people live within 100 miles of the coast and its trade and transportation opportunities.

In northern Europe, people also live near the coast, where there is milder weather than in the interior, even in the far north. inland regions, people are concentrated where good soils support farming or industry provides jobs.

The continents industrial areas fostered the growth of many major cities. Industries developed near the natural resources on which they depended, such as the coal and iron ore used to make steel. The Rhine-Ruhr region, with early 7 million inhabitants, grew up in northwestern Germany around iron and coal deposits.

Cities grew in these industrial regions and along river and coastal water routes that were needed to transport natural resources and finished products. Europe's population began to crowd into these cities and industrial areas in the 1800s.
