If you are safely out of the building you should wait for the fire truck to arrive.
Read the passage below and answer the following question. If you are safely out of the building you should _________? (2 points) TIP AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FIRST RESPONDERS AT THE SCENE OF A FIRE 1. Collect your thoughts. Keep your mind on what you are doing. Act Quickly. Don’t underestimate how fast a small fire can spread. If you cannot cope with it get out of the building quickly. 2. Once you are safely out, wait for the fire trucks and other firefighters to arrive. Don’t go back inside until more help arrives. 3. If the blaze is small and you think you can put it out, follow one or more of the steps listed below: a) Use a fire extinguisher. b) Use a woolen blanket or rug to smother the fire (be sure to use woolen items, as many of today’s synthetics will catch fire easily). c) Throw water from a garden hose on the fire if there is a hose handy. If a hose is not available throw water from a pail using a dipper or broom. d) Do not use water on an oil or grease fire. Use sand or dirt from flowerpots and/or baking soda. Water, especially in small amounts, will cause spattering of burning grease. e) Beat down any draperies, curtains or light materials cuasing the blaze using a wet broom or long pole. Using your bare hands may result in serious burns. 4. Tie a wet towel or any other material (preferably wool) over your mouth and nose if you are fighting the fire or if you are exposed to the smoke of flames. More people lose their lives by breathing smoke or suffocating than through burning. 5. Make sure that you can leave the building in the direction of a safe exit without passing through a burning area. Unless you can do something helpful get out of the building fast. 6. If you must go through a room full of smoke keep close to the floor and crawl on you hands and knees. Cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth. Take short breaths through your nose. The drafts and currents cause the smoke to rise and the air nearest the floor is usually the purest. 7. If you find smoke in an open stairway or open hall use another way out. 8. Head for stairs and not the elevator. A bad fire can cut off the power to elevators. Close all doors behind you.
