Who was the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest—George Mallory or Edmund Hillary? Witnesses reported seeing Mallory about 900 feet (275 meters) from the summit of the world's tallest mountain. After that, no one saw him alive again. Twenty-nine years later, New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay successfully scaled the mountain. The pair received credit as the first people to reach Everest's summit. Mountaineers have long argued, however, about whether Mallory reached the peak of Everest and died coming down. Mallory planned to leave a picture of his wife at the summit; a recent expedition that discovered Mallory's possessions found no such photo among them.

With no temperature control and, in some cases, no running water, travelers on the first commercial airplanes were not very comfortable. The cabins of these small planes often smelled of grease and disinfectant. This, paired with the low-altitude and therefore highly turbulent flight paths, made air sickness a very real problem. Airplane companies soon realized that it would be necessary to provide reassurance and first aid to their passengers. The companies hired young men to help passengers during their travel. Soon after, Ellen Church, a nurse, convinced the airlines that nurses would be best suited for the job, and in 1933, the role of airline stewardess was created.
