My first thought is that you need to get out of your usual environment to know about life. Moving from a rural to an urban area or moving from one country to another is what "away" means to me.
He also could mean that you have to get away from being self-centered and empathize with many diverse people.
Question : Matthew Antony, Grant’s former teacher tells him, “What do you know about life?” He tells him, “ You have to go away to know life.” – What does this mean to you?

okay but what i'd like to know is why is it important for someone to be able to interact in society, don't they think that they feel happy enough???
To know about life, most people need to interact with society. If they don't, they only know their own limited environment and nothing about other people and things.
Even Henry Thoreau, who spent 16 months by himself at Walden Pond, had occasional visitors -- and then went home to Concord where he interacted with other people.
