Question 7. In 2012, the 4th Rwandan Census recorded the following events:

Total population: 10,399, 000
Urban population: 18% of the total population
Total females: 5,400,000
Females 15-49 years: 2,780,000
Males 15-49 years: 2,695,000
Annual number of births: 380,000
Annual number of deaths: 130,000
Deaths during the first month (< 28 days): 6,500
Deaths during the first year (<365 days): 14,000
Deaths before reaching five years: 18,000
Calculate: a) Infant mortality rate; b) General fertility rate; c) Natural increase rate; d) sex ratio; e) Crude Birth Rate f) Post-neonatal mortality rate

1 answer

a) Infant mortality rate:
Infant mortality rate = (Deaths during the first year / Total number of live births) x 1000
Infant mortality rate = (14,000 / 380,000) x 1000 = 36.84 per 1000 live births

b) General fertility rate:
General fertility rate = (Number of live births / Total number of females 15-49 years) x 1000
General fertility rate = (380,000 / (2,780,000 + 2,695,000)) x 1000 = 56.76 per 1000 females 15-49 years

c) Natural increase rate:
Natural increase rate = (Number of live births - Number of deaths) / Total population
Natural increase rate = (380,000 - 130,000) / 10,399,000 = 0.024 or 2.4 per 1000

d) Sex ratio:
Sex ratio = Number of males / Number of females
Sex ratio = (10,399,000 - 5,400,000) / 5,400,000 = 1.929 or approximately 1.93

e) Crude Birth Rate:
Crude Birth Rate = (Number of live births / Total population) x 1000
Crude Birth Rate = (380,000 / 10,399,000) x 1000 = 36.54 per 1000 population

f) Post-neonatal mortality rate:
Post-neonatal mortality rate = (Deaths after 28 days and before reaching one year / Total number of live births) x 1000
Post-neonatal mortality rate = (14,000 - 6,500) / 380,000 = 18.16 per 1000 live births
