Here are the connections between Column A and Column B:
- Fossil Fuels: g. Coal, Oil and Natural gas. We use/burn them for energy.
- Greenhouse Gas: d. Any gas in the atmosphere that is capable of trapping heat. EX: carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor.
- Respiration: e. The intake of Oxygen and exhale of Carbon Dioxide performed by living organisms like animals and Humans.
- Equilibrium: t. Balance in Nature; also called "homeostasis."
- Ocean acidification: o. When an overabundance of carbon is dissolved in our saltwater and makes it more acidic.
- Gyres: n. Large circular patterns of surface currents in the oceans. These spin clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Global Conveyor Belt: f. A term given to both the surface and deep currents describing how they move ocean water ALL over the world.
- Negative Feedback example: q. Deserts have minimal bodies of water because there is very little rain. There is very little rain because there are no bodies of water to provide water vapor in the first place. (This is why deserts are destined to stay dry.)
- Glacial period: l. A ______ is an era of time that results of Earth experiencing extremely LOW global temperatures.
- Interglacial period: s. A _______ is an era of time that result of Earth experiencing HIGH global temperatures.
- Global Warming: b. _____ describes the climate conditions when there is a RISE in Earth's average surface temperature.
- Climate Change: r. A general shift in normal climate; measured through factors such as air temp, sea levels, and carbon dioxide levels.
- Industrial Revolution: h. Time period that resulted in a large amount of carbon load in the atmosphere due to the abundance of factories.
- Ozone hole: c. Area in the atmosphere over Antarctica that was created due to the output of greenhouse gases. It is now shrinking due to decreased use of these gases.
- Salinity: i. The saltiness of ocean water.
- Glacial retreat: m. Glaciers reducing in size because ice is melting faster than the snow is falling.
- Greenhouse effect: a. The ________ is the ability for the atmosphere to trap heat. It is natural and positive. Without this we could not have life on Earth!
- Jet Stream: p. Band of air in the atmosphere that drives weather across the US from West to East. Fun fact: airplanes jump aboard these to make better time when flying from west to east...
- Deforestation: k. Cutting down large tracts of trees/clearing the land for development. Decreases ability to absorb Carbon Dioxide because less photosynthesis taking place.
- Paleoclimatology: j. Field of study that shows the Earth's climate has continually changed throughout time.
These connections illustrate the relationships between climate phenomena and their impacts on the environment.
