Apparently the earliest African kingdoms developed in the northeastern part of the continent -- the region we now know as Egypt and Sudan.

I found several possible answers to your second question. The controlling kingdom depends upon the area of Africa referred to. Possibilities are the Songhai, Ghana, Mali, Askum kingdoms. Check your book.
