Lesson: Introduction to Music

Grade: 3

Objective: Students will be able to understand the basic elements of music such as rhythm, melody, and dynamics.

Materials Needed: Various musical instruments (drums, tambourines, bells, etc.), whiteboard and markers, paper and pencils for students.

Introduction (10 minutes):
1. Introduce the lesson by asking students what they know about music. Discuss different types of music they may have heard and what they enjoy listening to.
2. Explain that music is made up of different elements such as rhythm, melody, and dynamics. Define each element for the students.

Activity 1: Exploring Rhythm (15 minutes):
1. Show students different percussion instruments such as drums and tambourines. Demonstrate how to create a rhythm using these instruments.
2. Have students pair up and try creating their own rhythms using the instruments. Encourage them to experiment and create their own unique rhythms.

Activity 2: Melody and Dynamics (15 minutes):
1. Play a simple melody on a keyboard or other instrument and ask students to listen carefully to how the notes change in pitch.
2. Discuss how dynamics can change the mood of a piece of music. Play two versions of a piece, one loud and one soft, and ask students to identify the differences.

Conclusion (10 minutes):
1. Review the elements of music that were discussed in the lesson.
2. Have students create their own short musical composition using the knowledge they have learned about rhythm, melody, and dynamics.
3. Play each student's composition for the class and discuss how they used the elements of music in their piece.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on their participation in the activities and their ability to demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of music.
