Plane flying southwest at 155mi/hr. their is a wind from the west at 45.0mi/hr. what's the planes new velocity

1 answer

South ground velocity component = 155sin45 = 109.6 mi/hr
West ground velocity component = 155cos45 -45 = 64.6 mi/hr

Resultant ground speed =
sqrt[(109.6)^2 + (64.6)^2] = 127.2 mi/hr

Ground velocity direction = arctan(64.6/109.6) = 30.5 degrees West of South
