How many U.S. presidents can you name? You probably know the most recent and most famous presidents, but have you heard of James K. Polk? You should have. Although he is not as famous as presidents such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Polk deserves to be remembered because he accomplished everything that he set out to accomplish. He expanded the boundaries of the United States, created a new banking system, and lowered tariffs, or taxes paid on imports or exports.

Despite his accomplishments, Polk is rarely included on lists of America’s greatest presidents. This may be because he only served one term. It is wrong, however, to think that a president must serve two terms in order to be considered great. Instead, presidents should be judged on whether they kept the promises they made to the American people. Many two-term presidents have failed to keep their promises as well as President Polk did.
