Plessy vs. Ferguson was a landmark Supreme Court case that involved Homer Plessy, a man of mixed race who refused to sit in a segregated railroad car labeled "Whites Only." The event took place in Louisiana in 1896 and resulted in the Supreme Court ruling that "separate but equal" facilities were constitutional, thereby upholding the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation.

The event impacted Georgia's history by solidifying the precedent of segregation in the South and perpetuating the systemic racism and discrimination that African Americans faced on a daily basis. This ruling allowed for the continued segregation of public schools, transportation, and other public facilities, preventing black Americans from enjoying the same rights and opportunities as their white counterparts. Plessy vs. Ferguson contributed to the oppressive and discriminatory environment in Georgia and throughout the Southern United States during the Jim Crow era.
