    the Earth's axis of rotation (through the north and south poles) is tilted relative to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun
the Earth orbits the Sun once a year (that's where the year comes from)
... the Earth's axis always points in the same direction
so sometimes the northern hemisphere is facing the Sun (summer)
... and sometimes it is facing away (winter)
