Compare the advantages that the North had over the South during the Civil War, and vice versa
The North was becoming still more urban and industrial than the South. It's population was more than twice as large as the South's. The biggest technological change was the railroads. It had more than double the South's miles of railroad tracks. The North was much better prepared for war. The railroad made the movement of troops, food and supplies quicker. It also had more than twice as many factories. North was better able to produce guns, ammunition and shoes needed for it's army. It's economy was well balanced between farming and industry. North had far more money in its bank. Mostly, North already had a functioning government and an existing army and navy. The Unions also had more men available to their army because 2/3 of the nation's population lived in Union Sates.
The South's advantages: A majority of the nation's trained officers were Southerners because 7 of the nation's 8 military colleges were in the South. Most of these officers sided with the Confederacy. Also, the Southern army did not need to initiate any military action to win the war, they just needed to maintain a defensive position and keep from being beaten. Southerners also had the advantage of fighting to preserve their way of life and, they believed, their right to self-government
