A photosystem is a complex of proteins and pigments located in the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts and cyanobacteria. It plays a crucial role in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis, where it absorbs sunlight and converts it into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH. There are two main types of photosystems, photosystem I and photosystem II, which work together in the process of photosynthesis. Photosystem II is responsible for oxidizing water to produce oxygen, while photosystem I is involved in the production of reducing power in the form of NADPH.
