Phobia

A. Ghimire

A phobia is an extreme fear of something. Many children and adults have phobias. Phobias are different from normal fears. Phobias make people very afraid. The strong fears last for a long time, like six months or more. Phobias can be about a person/type of person, an animal/insect, a thing, a place/type of place, or a situation.

About 9 percent of children and teens have phobias. Some phobias are more common in children. These are: fear of animals, blood, the dark, flying, heights, getting shots at the doctors, getting sick, lightning/thunder, closed off spaces, worrying about a loved one being sick or hurt. Phobias may make children unable to enjoy normal activities in life.

People have phobias for many reasons. Sometimes, some chemicals in the brain trigger phobias. For some children, phobias are passed down, like hair color is passed down. Sometimes, bad experiences cause the beginning of phobias.

Phobias cannot be prevented. However, the sooner parents seek help for phobias, the better children can handle their extreme fears. Parents should ask an expert if their child is showing signs of phobia. Children and adults can overcome phobias to have an easier life.
