Read the part about trilateration.
From what I have been able to read, four are required unless the receiver clock is synchronized with the satellite clocks in which case only three are required. I think the key part of this question is "pinpoint.......on EARTH'S SURFACE". Knowing on earth's surface takes away the altitude aspect so three should do it I think. Remember I'm not a GPS expert.
