A KWLQ chart consists of four columns, and you fill in different information in each:
-
K (Know): Before you start reading, you fill in what you already know about the topic.
-
W (Want to know): In this column, you note what you want to learn or what questions you have about the topic before you begin reading.
-
L (Learned): After reading, you fill in this column with the information you learned from the text.
-
Q (Questions): This is where you can jot down any lingering questions you have after reading or questions that arose during your reading.
Typically, you would write in the L and Q columns during and after your reading. You might also update your W column as you discover new interests or gaps in your knowledge.
