Here’s how each of the substances in Oliver's science project can be classified:
- Air - Mixture (Air is a mixture of gases, primarily nitrogen and oxygen, along with smaller amounts of other gases.)
- Smog - Mixture (Smog is a mixture of air pollutants, including fog, smoke, and other particulates.)
- Oxygen - Pure substance (Oxygen in its diatomic form (O₂) is a pure substance, consisting only of oxygen molecules.)
- Sugar - Pure substance (Table sugar, or sucrose, is a pure substance with a specific chemical formula.)
- Coffee - Mixture (Coffee is a mixture of water, coffee solubles, oils, and other compounds.)
- Chocolate Milk - Mixture (Chocolate milk is a mixture of milk, cocoa, sugar, and sometimes other ingredients.)
So the classifications are:
- Pure Substances: Oxygen, Sugar
- Mixtures: Air, Smog, Coffee, Chocolate Milk
