Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones are two characters from the story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. The setting of this story is New York, during the 1790's, in a place called Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane, who was the new school teacher and also instructed young folks in psalmody, soon had his heart stolen by a young coquette known as Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina was a blooming young lass of fresh eighteen and was to one day inherit her father's large fortune. Ichabod, however, was not the only admirer who wished to make Katrina his wife, a very strong and muscular man named Brom Van Brunt also had an eye for the beautiful Katrina. Ichabod and Brom now had to compete to see who would win the heart of their beloved Katrina.
Ichabod Crane had a name very fitting for him, for he very much resembled a long-legged, long-necked bird. As was said in the story, "He was tall, but exceedingly lank, with narrow shoulders, long arms and legs, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, feet that might have served for shovels, and his whole frame most loosely hung together." Ichabod Crane was also very conscientious and superstitious, he enjoyed reading about witchcraft and hearing stories of ghosts and goblins.This is proved by the quotation in the story, "... he had read several books quite through, and was a perfect master of Cotton Mather's History of New England Witchcraft, in which, by the way, he most firmly believed." Brom Bones took advantage of Ichabod's superstition by playing boorish practical jokes on him in attempt to settle the feud between them for Katrina Van Tassel.
Brom Bones was a very muscular and mischievous man. He had a Herculean frame, curly black hair, and often played pranks on Ichabod. As was said in the story, "He was broad-shouldered and double-jointed, with short, curly black hair, and a bluff but not unpleasant countenance, having a mingled air of fun and arrogance." The problem Brom had with Ichabod was that they were both trying to win the heart of Katrina, and it seemed as though Ichabod was winning.
In yet another attempt to toy with Ichabod's imagination, Brom Bones told Ichabod and the rest of the men he was talking to at the Tassel's party in which they were invited of the time he supposedly encountered the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod took the story to heart on his journey back home that night. He let his superstition get the best of him and very frightened as he approached the very place where many of the scenes of the ghost stories had been laid. He soon noticed something huge, misshapen, black, and towering. After traveling a little while longer, he realized it was the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. The Headless Horseman chased Ichabod at full speed to a bridge over a brook, and then ended the chase by throwing his head at him and knocking him off his horse. In the morning, Ichabod's borrowed horse was found at his master's gate, but Ichabod was nowhere to be found. Ichabod's hat was found at the brook next to a shattered pumpkin. It is said that Ichabod was carried off by the Headless Horseman, or perhaps left town. Now that Ichabod was gone, Brom Bones had won the feud, He married Katrina Van Tassel.
