In this program, at least 150 million trees of various species have been planted across the country, over an area of 50,000 hectares (123,600 acres). Trees are essential for the health of both humans and wild animals. Yet. Countless trees were cut down in Burundi in a decade long civil war that began in 1993. Current reforestation efforts aim to restore the banana plantations, fruit trees, and oil palms that covered vast grounds in Burundi.
