Nonlinear homework...

Solve the system by elimination.
1)y=x^2+2
-4x-y=10

2) Solve the system using substitution.
Y=-3x^2+x-2
Y=-5x+3

1 answer

1)
add them the way they sit

-4x = x^2 + 12
x^2 + 4x + 12 = 0
I would complete the square:
x^2 + 4x + 4 = -12 + 4
(x+2)^2 = -8
x+2 = ± √-8 = ± 2√2 i
x = -2 ± 2√2 i

for 2)
you would get
-5x+3 = -3x^2 + x - 2
3x^2 - 6x + 5 = 0

give it a shot...... (use the formula)
