My Buddy Bear

Today, Bear and I are searching for truffles in the woods. I adopted Bear two years ago from a shelter where he had lived for two years. Bear had patchy, wiry fur and awkward features, but I knew I wanted him as soon as I saw him.

I love Bear's nose, even though he snores sometimes. I taught him and his fabulous nose how to locate truffles growing underground. Like Bear, truffles are not beautiful; in fact, some look like they are rotting clumps of dirt. But they taste great, and people buy them for a lot of money, so Bear and I hunt for them as often as we can.

The morning is invigorating and sunny, and a few people are in the woods, also hunting truffles. However, they don't have Bear. Immediately he picks up a smell and leads me to a spot, where he digs at the ground once and waits for me to start digging.

"Great truffle!" a man says, coming up to see what I found. He smiles at me and then looks surprised when he sees Bear. "Interesting dog."

"I never judge a book by its cover," I said as I put the black clump in my bag and scratched Bear on his head. "Otherwise, I'd miss out on too much good stuff."
