My bearded dragon is not eating why

1 answer

There can be several reasons why your bearded dragon is not eating. Here are some common factors to consider:

  1. Temperature: Bearded dragons are ectothermic, meaning they rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature. If the basking area is not warm enough (around 100-110°F or 38-43°C), they may not feel inclined to eat. Ensure your enclosure has a proper temperature gradient.

  2. Stress: Changes in their environment, handling, loud noises, or the presence of other pets can stress a bearded dragon, leading to a loss of appetite. Try to minimize stressors in their habitat.

  3. Health Issues: Illness can often lead to decreased appetite. Common health problems include parasites, metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections, or other underlying conditions. If your dragon appears lethargic, has abnormal stools, or shows other signs of illness, consult a veterinarian.

  4. Diet and Preference: Sometimes, bearded dragons can become picky eaters. Ensure you are providing a variety of foods, including appropriate vegetables, fruits, and insects. If they've been eating the same thing for a while, they may lose interest.

  5. Brumation: If your bearded dragon is an adult and the seasons are changing, they may be entering a brumation phase (a period of dormancy). This can lead to decreased appetite. Brumation is normal, but if you’re unsure, consult a vet.

  6. Hydration: Dehydration can also suppress appetite. Ensure they have access to fresh water and consider misting them or providing a soak if needed.

If your bearded dragon continues to refuse food for more than a few days, or if you have other concerns about their health, it’s a good idea to consult a veterinarian experienced with reptiles.
