Before contact with Europeans, most Native American cultures in North America viewed land and resources as belonging to the whole group. Everyone lived on the land, and everyone worked the land to produce food, therefore the land and food belonged to everyone. For the Europeans, land ownership had been a major part of their culture for centuries. The feudal system, which dominated government and economics in Europe for roughly 500 years prior, was essentially an exchange of land for loyalty.
