Mutations in gametic cells (also known as germ cells) affect the next generation. These are the cells involved in reproduction—sperm and eggs. When mutations occur in these cells, they can be passed on to offspring during fertilization. In contrast, mutations in somatic cells (non-reproductive cells) do not get transmitted to the next generation, although they can affect the individual during their life.
