Blake paused mid-step when he heard Maya’s tiny voice. He turned to see her running toward him, her face streaked with tears and uncertainty.

“Maya!” he called, kneeling down, his heart aching at the sight of her distress. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

Maya stopped before him, her little hands clenched at her sides. “Laylah said you were a bad guy…” Her voice trembled as she spoke, and she looked down at the ground, avoiding his gaze.

“Maya,” Blake said softly, reaching out a hand to brush a tear from her cheek. “I’m not a bad guy. People from the surface have made mistakes, but I’m just trying to help. I promise.”

She sniffled, her brows furrowing in confusion. “But she said you’re from the surface… that you’re dangerous.”

Blake took a deep breath, choosing his words carefully. “I understand why she would say that. There are things that have happened between our worlds, and not everyone trusts outsiders. But I came here because I care about people—like you.”

“Laylah said you’d hurt us,” Maya said quietly, her big eyes searching his. “But… I don’t want to believe that.”

“I know it’s hard,” Blake replied, his voice steady but gentle. “Sometimes fear can make people think the worst of others. But I’m not like that. I want to protect everyone I can, including you and Laylah.”

Maya wiped her eyes with her sleeve, still skeptical but visibly torn. “But what if you’re lying?”

“Then you can choose not to trust me,” Blake said, his heart heavy. “But I hope you give me a chance. I’m here to help, not to hurt.”

The waves lapped at the shore, a gentle reminder of the shifting ground beneath them. Maya squared her tiny shoulders, her innocence battling the burden of doubt placed upon her by Laylah.

“Okay,” she finally said, her voice small but steady. “But if you do anything bad… I’ll tell Laylah!”

Blake chuckled softly, feeling a glimmer of hope. “That’s fair, Maya. I’d expect nothing less from you. Just remember, I’m here for a reason. And that reason is to help you and everyone below, not to create more problems.”

Maya hesitated for a moment, then nodded slowly, tiny fists relaxing at her sides. “You promise?”

“I promise,” Blake replied, a smile breaking through the seriousness of the moment. He extended his hand, and after a brief hesitation, she took it. “Let’s figure this out together.”
