Thank you for using the Jiskha Homework Help Forum. I'm sure I gave you the patterns for regular -ar, -er, -ir verbs before. You must memorize the endings. There are more -ar verbs than -er and more -er than -ir if you h ave to guess. Of course, with the irregular verbs, you just have to memorize the entire pattern.
Take any infinitive (-ar, -er, -ir) and drop that ending. Then, based on the subject, follow the pattern:
-ar = o, as, a, amos, ais, an
-er = o, es, e, emos, eis, en
-ir = o, es, e, imos, is, en
Notice where they are similar and where they are NOT. The nosotros/nosotras will ALWAYS identify whether the verb is -ar, -er, -ir.
The 2 irregular verbs you have above are:
ser = soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son
estar = estoy, estás, está, estamos, estais, están
Many irregular verbs have an irregular "yo" form.
