Lost and Found

A. Gautam

This past September, my little sister and I had a surprise waiting for us when we got home from school. A tiny, gray kitten was on our front porch! My sister squealed happily when she saw it, but I told her not to get excited.

“She is probably lost, Laura,” I said. “Her family might be looking for her.”

Our mother said that we could keep the kitten until we found her owners. The only problem was that we had never owned a cat. My mother and I found a book at the library about how to take care of a kitten. Then we went to the store. We got a few cans of food, a litter box, a bag of litter, and some cat toys. We were determined to make that kitten as happy as possible while she was visiting.

That weekend, Laura and I made posters to hang around the neighborhood. We included our mother’s phone number so that the kitten’s owner could contact us. We also spent some time playing with the kitten.

“I hope the owner doesn’t see these posters,” Laura said as we hung a poster to a stop sign. “I want to keep that kitten forever.”

I smiled at my sister. “Imagine how her family feels without their pet,” I said. “They are probably very sad.” Laura nodded.

The following morning, my mother’s phone rang. It was the kitten’s owner! She came to our house right away, along with a little boy. The boy seemed shy at first, but as soon as he saw the kitten his eyes lit up like fireworks and he smiled from ear to ear.

“Molly!” he shouted, scooping up the kitten with both hands. “I missed you so much!”
