Looking on the national gallery of art website (or it can be seen by typing the name of the painting in any search box) review The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries by Jacques Louis David.Discuss the painting techniques and formal elements. I am confused on this. I can see that the painting techniques would be formal and of a realistic view but don't think that is what is needed.

I'd choose the best image to have on my computer screen (the most detailed, I think). I'd also read widely in the second set of search results above and make myself very familiar with neoclassical painting -- then I'd use the neoclassical painting elements in completing this assignment.

Why do you think the painting is so formal? There seems to be no emotion involved, right? Or ... what do you think? Formal and emotionless paintings make us think what?

And realism? Why did the painter use realism and not idealism in his painting? How did he do that?
