Orientalism is not a term that's used by most people. It basically means anything connected with Asia. Remember that Asia includes a large number of diverse cultures and nations -- Japan, Russia, India, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Korea, Afghanistan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Korea, China, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, etc.
Angie, your Axia class is the only class in any college that uses Said's "Orientalism" as a legitimate source. It is not a mainstream book. Check this site for more information.

In my opinion, orientalism has nothing to do with prejudice and hate crimes against Muslims and Arabs. Several diverse minorities have been victims of hate crimes in the last 20 years or so. They've included orthodox Jews, African-Americans, s, women, Arabs/Muslims and foreigners. Hate crimes are perpetrated by violent and ignorant criminals who fortunately number only a miniscule percentage of Americans.
Prejudice is fostered by an individual's experiences with a few members of the minority group plus the stories and beliefs of his/her friends. In the case of Muslims/Arabs, the attacks of 9/11, carried out by a few members of this group, fanned the flames of distrust and prejudice. Muslim/Arabic suicide bombers in other countries haven't helped lay this prejudice to rest.
