Limiting Screen Time
People today are surrounded by technology. From smart refrigerators to smart thermostats to smart televisions and smartphones, everything can be controlled from a screen. Grown-ups spend a good part of their time looking at screens, for work and for leisure. Even young children are skilled at using smartphones and other electronic devices.
According to a survey, parents generally let children use the internet once they reach the age of three. These children play educational games or watch educational videos. There seems to be no harm in allowing children to access educational content online. But according to research by a psychiatrist1, children who spend a large part of their day using electronic devices start developing behavioral issues. These children become less social and more stubborn.
To curb this problem, companies have started implementing screen time limiting features in their devices. Parents can set a limit for how much time children can use a device, after which the device locks itself. Doctors recommend that children under 18 years of age be allowed a maximum screen time of two hours for entertainment. Children below the age of two, meanwhile, should not be exposed to any screens.
