Jim paddles from one shore of a lake three miles wide at 4 mph, and John paddles from the opposite shore at 5 mph. How long will they travel before they meet?

A. 20 minutes
B. 27 minutes

C. 1 hour, 24 minutes

D. 3 hours

can you get me started on this?
I do not know you work with pounds, Euros or dollars. Let's use dollars.

If you have 12 dollars, and you have 9 dollars left.
Then you have spent 12-9=3 dollars.
The percentage spent is 3/12*100=25%
i.e.
amount spent/original amount*100%

The percentage of the amount left is, similarly,
9/12*100=75%, or
amount left/original amount * 100%
Suggestion: if you have a different problem, you are better off posting a new thread.

Paddling problem:
If the Jim and John paddle towards each other, the relative speed is the sum of the two, namely 4+5=9.
The lake is three mile wide, so time taken should be 3/9 hour= 1/3 hour=20 minutes.
Clarifications:

If you have already posted a question, do NOT post a second one using the same thread because others MAY think that the question has been answered.

DO post multiple questions in the same thread if they are similar in nature, so there will be a continuity of explanations.
