Title: Reflexive Pronouns
Grade Level: 4th-6th grade
Objective: Students will be able to identify and properly use reflexive pronouns in writing and speaking.
Materials:
- Whiteboard/Smartboard
- Markers
- Handout with sentences containing reflexive pronouns
- Grammar worksheet on reflexive pronouns
Introduction:
1. Begin by explaining what a reflexive pronoun is: a pronoun that is used to refer to the subject of the sentence and who is also the object of the action.
2. Write examples on the board and have students identify the reflexive pronoun and the antecedent it refers to (i.e. myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself, ourselves, themselves).
Direct Instruction:
1. Distribute handouts with sentences containing reflexive pronouns.
2. Ask students to find the reflexive pronouns in the sentences.
3. Go over the answers as a class and discuss the function of the reflexive pronoun in each sentence.
4. Give further examples and have students practice identifying the reflexive pronouns and their antecedents.
Guided Practice:
1. Write a sentence on the board with a missing reflexive pronoun, and have students choose the appropriate reflexive pronoun to complete the sentence.
2. As a class, go over the correct answers and explain the reasoning behind each choice.
Independent Practice:
1. Distribute a grammar worksheet on reflexive pronouns.
2. Have students complete the worksheet individually.
3. Collect the worksheets for assessment.
Closing:
1. Review the key concepts learned during the lesson.
2. Have students give examples of sentences where they would use reflexive pronouns.
3. End the lesson by asking students to write a short paragraph using at least two reflexive pronouns, which they will then share with the class.
