It's fun to play in the sun, but did you know that too much sun could be bad for you? If you have ever had a sunburn, you have felt some of the bad effects of too much sun and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Too many UV rays can cause more serious health effects, such as skin cancer, older-looking skin, and other skin problems. Eye damage can also be caused by too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays.

The ozone layer forms a thin shield high up in the sky. It protects life on Earth from the sun's UV rays. In the 1980s, scientists discovered clues that the ozone layer was going away or being depleted. Ozone depletion, weather, and the seasons cause different amounts of UV radiation to reach the Earth. Because too much UV can cause bad health effects, like sunburn and eye damage, it’s important to begin good sun-safe habits while you are young and to stay sun-safe your whole life.

Being sun-safe means protecting your skin from the sun’s UV radiation by blocking it. Wearing protective clothing such as a hat and sunglasses is one way to do this. Wearing sunscreen or sunblock is another way to fight the effects of harmful UV rays. Be sure to look for sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Your sunscreen should also block both UVA and UVB rays. It is important to reapply sunscreen every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.

Which DOES NOT support the author's opinion that it's important to protect yourself from too much sun?
