S=.5+.25
L=.5+.25+.75=1.5 mile
This example might help:
A grocery store has 5 pounds of granola. One customer buys 2/3 pounds granola and another buys 5/6 pound. After these purchases how much granola is left?
2/3 + 4/6 + 5/6 = 9/6 =1 1/2. 5 - 1 1/2 = 3 1/2
