A plane flies 400 miles with the wind and 300 miles against the wind in the same length of time. If the speed of the wind is 25 mph, what is the speed of the plane in still air?
500 becuase it takes away a hundred mph with the aerodynamicness
let the speed of the plane be x mph
so going with the wind, speed is x+25
time to go 400 miles = 400/(x+25)
against the wind, speed is x-25
time to go 300 miles = 300/(x-25)
but the two times are equal, so
400/(x+25) = 300/(x-25)
cross-multiply
400x - 10000 = 300x + 7500
100x = 17500
x = 175
The plane's speed in still air is 175 mph
so going with the wind, speed is x+25
time to go 400 miles = 400/(x+25)
against the wind, speed is x-25
time to go 300 miles = 300/(x-25)
but the two times are equal, so
400/(x+25) = 300/(x-25)
cross-multiply
400x - 10000 = 300x + 7500
100x = 17500
x = 175
The plane's speed in still air is 175 mph
