work= .01 x mass x distance

mass measured in grams

distance measured in meters

No. If you want work W in Joules, that would be
W, J = (force, N)*(distance, m)
= (mass, kg)*(g,m/s^2)*(distance,m)
= 0.001 (mass, g)*9.8 m/s^2*(distance,m)

The numerical factor would be 0.0098, slightly less than 0.01
right, so in other words I would round it . . . . .
